On Sunday March 4th 2012, S.B. & Company will offer at auction the estate of Alvin Southwick of Westminster Vermont along with selected items that descended in the family of President James Garfield, and also several lots from a Newton and Brookline MA estate. Mr. Southwick was an outstanding member of Southern Vermont who after his death left several organizations sizeable donations for the betterment of the community. Of note, a pastel portrait of a nude by James Wells Champney, 1900, a friend of the family that has never been seen will be sold. Champney fell to his death in an elevator shaft in NYC in 1903 while on his way to develop some prints at the Camera Club. Other artwork offered will be two pcs by John Fulton Folinsbee, a New Hope PA artist, both portraits of young children, and a watercolor of Pompei by Giovanni Gallo. There is a portrait of Alexi Romanoff, signed in old Russian. Mid modern pieces such as an Erte bronze, and print, and several Charles Bragg etchings along with other oils, watercolors, etchings and prints will round out the artwork.
